Relationship, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) contributes to promoting the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at school and within society, thus preparing them for the responsibilities and experiences of adult life. RSHE became statutory for all primary schools from September 2020. Here at St. Joseph’s to support the teaching and learning we have subscribed to a programme by Ten:Ten called ‘Life to the Full’. This is based upon ‘A Model Catholic RSHE Curriculum’ by the Catholic Education Service, which was highlighted as a work of good practice by the Department of Education. It is an entire platform of creative resources that we think will engage, inform and inspire children, parents and staff.
Life to the Full follows a four-stage structure which is repeated across four different learning stages:
- Early Years Foundation Stage is aimed at Reception
- Key Stage One is aimed at Years 1 and 2
- Lower Key Stage Two is aimed at Years 3 and 4
- Upper Key Stage Two is aimed at Years 5 and 6
Within each learning stage, there are three Modules which are based on the Model Catholic RSHE Curriculum:
- Created and Loved by God
- Created to Love Others
- Created to Live in Community
Parents are kept informed of when children will learn about certain subjects via our termly curriculum maps. In addition to this teachers in years 4 – 6 will hold parent meetings prior to the modules which are taught in the summer term. These meetings will give parents the opportunity to learn about how the children will be taught about puberty (Years 4 and 5) and making babies (Year 6).
