The National Curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:
- become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
- reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
- can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpl.er steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
At St Josephs we believe that Mathematics is an important creative discipline that helps us to understand and change the world. At St Joseph’s Catholic primary school, we have adopted a mastery approach in order to deliver the three aims of the National Curriculum, fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Underpinning this pedagogy is a belief that all children can achieve in maths. We want children working together to support and encourage everyone. The idea that learning from mistakes underpins our school ethos. We believe in promoting a sustained and deeper understanding by employing a variety of mastery strategies, small steps allow us to stay together as a team. Our approach aims to provide all children with full access to the curriculum, enabling them to develop independence, confidence and competence in mathematics in order to be independent mathematicians who are well equipped to apply their learning to the wider world.?
Children’s learning takes place in ‘Blocks’ this allows for a deeper understanding within a block before moving on to a new block. When you click on the link below you will find the blocks that your child will be completing within their year group.
Please note, that there will be occasions where your child’s teacher will change the order of or extend/shorten a block to meet the needs of the class.
